Measles is a highly contagious virus that typically resides in the nose and throat of infected individuals and is passed via airborne transmission. According to the CDC (link) the 2015 measles outbreak has resulted in 102 cases (7 in Arizona) in January alone.
Initial symptoms of measles include:
- High Fever
- Cough
- Runny nose and
- Watery eyes
These symptoms are followed three to five days later by a rash that appears on the face and spreads down the body.
Complications
Most concerning with the virus are potential complications which include ear infection, croup and diarrhea. 1 in 20 children will develop pneumonia from a case of measles and 1 in 1000 children develop encephalitis (brain swelling) that can lead to loss of consciousness and death.
